Valorie McAlpin, Ed.D., Director
Valorie is the new Director of the Center as of October 1, 2007. Valorie comes to UNC Charlotte from the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources at the University of Maryland, where she served as the Assistant Dean for Distance and Continuing Education, the Associate Dean for Communications and Information Technology, and the Executive Director of Online Learning. These experiences, combined with her Ed.D. in Adult Education from NC State University, provide an ideal background for her leadership of CTL as it continues its mission of providing professional development and support for teaching and learning and instructional technologies. Valorie also holds a faculty appointment in the Department of Educational Leadership in the College of Education.
J. Garvey Pyke, Ed.D., Instructional Programs

Garvey leads the Center’s Instructional Programs, which focus mainly on providing faculty professional development opportunities and resources regarding instructional innovations, pedagogical needs, and assessment of learning.

Garvey enjoys helping faculty members, staff, and graduate assistants to design and develop the instructional aspects of their courses.  He also provides a “bridging” perspective between best practices in teaching and learning and various instructional technologies. His work involves the practical application of research methods and instructional systems design methods to various instructional projects at the university.

Lorraine Stanton, Coordinator of e-Learning Programs
As leader of the e-Learning Training and Support Team, Lorraine coordinates the development and implementation of CTL’s e-learning programs for faculty, staff, and students. Communicating with the campus constituents as needed to increase awareness of our services, Lorraine works to continually improve the quality of our services by developing and implementing programmatic improvements in accordance with customer feedback, future directions, and best practices.
Nicole Harris, e-Learning Applications Developer
As part of our Technical Systems Team, Nicole is responsible for applications programming and development. She analyzes new technologies to determine their feasibility and benefit to our campus, and then works towards implementing these technologies. She develops applications and other programmable solutions, integrating them with new and existing systems and processes. Nicole provides specialized consulting and technical support for various learning technologies. In addition to administration and support of our learning management system (LMS), Nicole also works closely with other areas of ITS to ensure that we maintain the integrity and security of our learning system data.
Sam Eneman, Instructional Technology Consultant / Centra Administrator
Sam provides e-learning training and support to faculty, staff and students, and also is responsible for workshop and tutorial development and implementation. Sam is also responsible for workshop and tutorial development and implementation, and creation of related tutorials. In addition to his regular support duties and special projects, Sam is also responsible for our Centra system administration, including determining and scheduling configurations and updates, maintaining the user database, and managing events. He also develops and provides faculty training in Centra’s use.
Caryl Gordon, Instructional Technology Consultant / Lab Manager
Caryl provides e-learning training and support to faculty, staff and students, and also is responsible for workshop and tutorial development and implementation. In addition to her regular support duties and special projects, Caryl is also responsible for maintaining the CTL technology lab, including updating desktop machines and creating new lab images. She works with colleagues, junior team members and other ITS staff to ensure proper functioning and upkeep of lab equipment in accordance with University standards.
Melanie Smith, Instructional Technology Consultant
Melanie provides e-learning training and support to faculty, staff and students, and also is responsible for workshop and tutorial development and implementation. In addition to her regular support duties and special projects, Melanie is also responsible for Camtasia Studio training and development. She is also responsible for providing assistant support for Centra system administration, including assisting with scheduling configurations, maintaining the user database, and managing events.
Deborah Mowry, Web Design Specialist / Instr. Tech. Consultant
As part of our Technical Systems Team, Debbie is responsible for the design and development of our departmental websites. She specializes in graphical design, web accessibility and standards, and strives to ensure that our websites adhere to these important guidelines. Debbie also provides general administration and support for our learning management system (LMS) and other related applications. She works closely with other departmental staff to offer assistance on technical troubleshooting, system analysis, and problem resolution.
Maria Yon, Ed.D., Faculty Associate
As the Faculty Fellow for the Center, Maria is involved primarily with our instructional programs to help faculty with professional development in teaching and learning. She is available to help all faculty, staff, and graduate assistants in developing resources for the classroom through her pedagogical workshops and seminars and by holding individual consultations.  Maria has expertise in a variety of educational areas and especially enjoys assessment and also peer evaluation of teaching. Maria is also a faculty member in the College of Education.
Pamela Becker, Administrative Assistant
Pamela is the Center’s Administrative Assistant. She is primarily responsible for handling the Center’s day to day logistics and paperwork. She helps to maintain the department budget, provides support for hiring new staff members, and assists with special events. She works closely with the Director on the Center’s ongoing projects and reports directly to her. Pamela has expertise in the administration of non-profit organizations as well as government organizations.
